TOGETHER GIBRALTAR’S RESPONSE TO GOVERNMENT’S PEDESTRIANISATION PLAN
We live in a Gibraltar that is riddled with pollution, traffic and construction. As a consequence, the quality of life of our residents is sharply decreasing and the product we offer our visitors is losing appeal. Together Gibraltar has always envisaged a Gibraltar that is cleaner, healthier and friendlier, and the reduction in car use is a fundamental part of this transformation.
Together Gibraltar is encouraged by the Government’s recently released video depicting plans to beautify and part pedestrianise Line Wall Road. The party believes that this plan, which is clearly modelled on Together Gibraltar’s 2019 manifesto plan, alongside the announced improvement in public transport routes and frequency, has the potential to kickstart the green transport revolution that Gibraltar needs.
Unfortunately and due to the erratic behaviour of Government on this issue so far (improvising traffic restrictions only to scale them down days later), the party remains unsure about the plan’s actual implementation. Government has shown their conviction on environmental issues is very shaky and can rapidly descend in the priority list if issues arise, and TG would not like to see this project parked only to resurface at a greater cost months before the next election.
The party would like to remind Government that this plan is necessary to tackle the climate emergency that they themselves announced in the previous legislature, and that these measures should be implemented with no delay.
