Happy Pride 2021!

HAPPY PRIDE 2021!

Together Gibraltar celebrates PRIDE with the LGBTQ+ community, which has fought so hard for equality. We have moved in great strides over the last 10 years:

2012 - Equalisation of the age of consent

2013 - Anti-discrimination laws in all areas and hate-crime legislation

2014 - Adoption by same-sex couples

2014 - Recognition of Civil Partnerships by same-sex couples

2016 - Same-sex marriage

2017 - IVF treatment for lesbian couples

2019 - Removal of provision for conscientious objection by registrars for same-sex couples from the Marriage Act (Clause 6b)

2021 - Surrogacy bill

Same-sex marriage WITHOUT conditions (as fought for in Parliament by Marlene Hassan Nahon) was paramount to the normalisation of same-sex relationships and to increase visibility and acceptance. There is still work to be done regarding the trans community and to further education to do away with homophobia and transphobia.

Why do we need Pride? Heterosexuals are not discriminated against, oppressed, persecuted against for their sexuality anywhere in the world. While the LGBTQ+ community is now in a much better place than 10 years ago there are still reasons where real equality has not been reached - public displays of affection (such as holding hands), microagressions, discrimination or lack of acceptance in some family or friends circles as experienced by some.

There are also 69 countries or territories where being LGBQ+ is outlawed (almost half are Commonwealth territories) and in some, it is punishable by death. The day when the LGBTQ+ community can live without fear is when we will no longer need Pride.

Together Gibraltar always has and will always support our LGBTQ+ community - equality, diversity, inclusion and acceptance are part of our core values and are in our Party DNA.
